After graduating, I wanted to travel and experience another city other than Tampa Bay, Florida. I thought that the Big Apple would be just the place! I have always had an idea of what New York City was like through pictures and movies, but it will never compare to the real thing. It’s still hard to even describe everything I saw, heard, smelled, and felt walking through this bustling city that was full of life.
I saw more people in during my 5-day stay in NYC than I ever have while living in Florida. The people there are so culturally diverse. Everywhere I went I noticed different languages, foods, and clothing. At first glance, the people seemed solemn and unsociable. But after being there for a few days, I noticed that the people of NYC are friendlier than I initially thought. It wasn’t uncommon to stop at an intersection or subway and strike up conversation for a minute or so and then be on my way again.
(Pictures and movies from my trip)
The tourist locations were amazing to see. The top of the Empire State building, the Statue of Liberty, Madison Square Garden and the city itself left me awe-struck from the sheer scale and beautiful architecture. But aside from the common attractions, some of the best experiences came from simply walking around the city. Each part of the city had its own distinct flavor. From highbrow riverside apartments to urban city parks, no two places felt the same.
I could imagine myself working in the city for a couple of years during my career. I truly understand why they say “If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere”. I asked a New Yorker what the best part of New York was, his answer was simple – “opportunity”. The hardest part of NYC for me would be adjusting to the area and finding my way around. I suggest everyone take a New York City trip at some point and time in life. It was an experience of a life time and I enjoyed every minute of it. If you want to know more details about the trip feel free to ask!
Hi Alex, I really would love to go to NYC too! A new yorker told you this “If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere”, would you please elaborate when he said that the best part of NYC was "opportunity". I'm pleased to know your thoughts since you've been there already. (just curious)
Thanks much!
Hey Charissa,
Sure. I really recommend you visit. And to answer your question, I meant there is so many people there. In some places its easy to get to the "top" because there isn't as much competition around you. But in the heart of NYC, there's so much competition, and if you can beat ALL of those people out - you have a good chance of "making it anywhere".
On the other side of that, your are going to have a lot of different opportunities to meet a lot of new people. Are you planning on taking a trip there any time soon?
